A Treatise upon Four Axes, United
Being a Demonstration of the Formula whereby a Daily Reading is derived from the Sign of the Heavens, the Number of the Day, the Zodiac of Cathay, and the Phase of the Moon — and reconciled, all four, by one Common Seed.
Herein is set forth the manner by which a single reading is drawn from four independent demonstrations, each a pure function of the calendar, and each governed by its own proper law. Two demonstrations — the Sign and the Zodiac of Cathay — are fixed upon the day of one's birth and never after alter. Two others — the Number of the Day and the Phase of the Moon — are common to every soul upon a given day, and change with it. What follows is the geometry and arithmetic of each, and the manner of their union.
Fig. I — The Three Heavens
Three concentric skies, each a true partition of the year into unequal arcs — for the heavens were never divided into twelve equal parts by nature, only by convention. The outer ring alone bears Cetus, the Whale, carved from the body of Pisces.
Fig. II — Why Thirteen Signs, Why Fourteen
The Traditional twelve divide the year into equal thirty-day estates, by convention alone. The heavens themselves keep no such symmetry. What follows sets out the two further skies, whence each arises, and how the reading itself is remade beneath them.
The Sun, in its yearly course, does not pass through twelve constellations of equal breadth — it passes through thirteen, of wildly unequal breadth, for the constellations themselves were drawn by ancient hands, not measured to a common span. Between the Scorpion and the Archer lies a thirteenth house the almanacs omit: Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, occupying the sky from the xxix of November to the xvi of December. This is the table popularly said to be "the sign astronomy remembers and astrology forgot" — no new discovery, only an old omission named aloud.
Once Ophiuchus is admitted, the twelve estates can no longer be held equal. Scorpius, crowded into a mere six days, and Virgo, sprawling across forty-four, sit upon the same wheel. Fig. III below sets their true proportions side by side.
A fourteenth house, Cetus, is carved from the body of Pisces — the xxi to the xxviii of March — splitting Pisces into two disjoint estates, one before Cetus and one after. Unlike Ophiuchus, no astronomical body of record fixes Cetus's bounds; this is Inner Sign's own declared convention, offered as a further lens rather than a hidden fact, and named as such wherever it appears.
Both Pisces estates, though each now shortened, keep the decan they would have held under Pisces's full, unshadowed span — a birthday inside Cetus's own week resolves to Cetus and never touches Pisces's reckoning at all. See Proposition I's formula, and its note on the Pisces exception.
Fig. III — The True Proportions of a Year, Three Ways
Read left to right as the year runs, xii months round. Mark how Scorpius shrinks to a sliver once Ophiuchus is admitted, and how Cetus splits Pisces in twain — this is precisely why no decan may claim a fixed third of ten days; each must take its proportion of whatever span its house is truly given, per Proposition I.
How the reading itself changes. Choosing among the three skies remakes only the Sign and its Decan — the Number of the Day, the Zodiac of Cathay, and the Phase of the Moon are untouched, for none of the three depend upon the sun's house. And the remaking costs less than it first appears: the same company of phrasings serves all three skies alike, since a passage describing Aries's character does not care which table decided a soul is Aries. Only two houses want writing found nowhere in the Traditional twelve — Ophiuchus and Cetus, three decans each — six new fragments raised upon the base six-and-thirty, not three whole companies built anew. Wherever signs are listed for browsing, the newly-admitted house is shown first, that its presence not go unnoticed.
Four Propositions
A sign's span is not divided into three equal decades, for Ophiuchus spans but xviii days, and Cetus a mere viii — instead each decan claims its proportion of whatever the sign's true length may be.
Worked: 15 June, Traditional → Gemini, offset 25 of 31 days → decan ⌊2.42⌋ = 2 → gemini_decan3.
The full date of the present day, digit by digit, summed and summed again until one figure alone remains, 1 through 9 — no master numbers retained, that convention belonging to a different reckoning not yet drawn upon.
Worked: 17 July 2026 → 7+1+7+2+0+2+6 = 25 → 2+5 = 7 → day_7.
Twelve creatures turning against five elements make sixty years entire. But the new year of Cathay falls not upon the first of January — it wanders between the xxi of January and the xx of February — so a table of true dates governs the boundary, never a fixed guess.
Worked: born 15 Jan 1990, before that year's CNY (27 Jan) → effective year 1989, not 1990 → snake_earth, not horse.
Eight phases from one continuous age, each bucket centered upon its own true phase rather than merely begun there — a distinction that once misjudged near half of every full and new moon in the sky.
Corrected: 13 of 13 real full moons of 2026, and 3 of 3 new moons, now fall in their rightful house. Before the correction: but 6 of 13.
Corollary — The Union of the Four
Four demonstrations, reconciled without collapsing into sameness. A seal drawn fresh for each axis — from the birth-date, the present day, and the axis's own name together — elects one variant from that axis's company of phrasings, independently of the other three, yet always the same for the same soul upon the same day.
Never the language's own native hashing — hash(into:) in Swift, hashCode() in Kotlin — for neither is bound to agree with the other, nor even with itself between one version and the next. FNV-1a is written by hand, identically, on both shores.
Revised xviii July MMXXVI. Two false starts preceded this form: XOR-ing one shared seal against each axis's name, rather than baking the name into the seal itself, forced three of the four axes to always choose alike. And even once corrected, FNV-1a's lowest bits alone proved too poorly-mixed to trust — the seal's upper bits, taken by the shift above, were needed to make the four demonstrations truly independent. Both errors were caught only by testing the mended form against many births and many days, not by the mending's appearance alone.
opener → core trait → number of the day → zodiac of cathay → moon
